Through its programs the choir will promote and enhance public interest in and appreciation for choral music, foster goodwill and community spirit through musical performances to diverse audiences, and maintain excellence in training through performance of a varied repertoire.
Led by music director Christine Dandy and accompanied by pianist Rykie Avenant, the enthusiastic and fun-loving members of Encore! Women’s Choir share their love of singing with their community through scheduled concerts and participation in local events in Duncan, BC and throughout the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island.
Encore! Women’s Choir is an auditioned community choir composed of committed and motivated musicians. Some of our members are music teachers with music degrees, while others have extensive musical training in vocal and/or instrumental music. All members have extensive choral experience, read music well, and enjoy the challenge of learning and perfecting music that is both interesting and inspiring.
One of our goals is to maintain a high standard of polished, competent choral singing. We do this by spending an enjoyable couple of hours at rehearsal each Monday evening and by working on our music individually between rehearsals. We perform sacred and secular music, serious and light, and we enjoy performing comedic numbers as some of our members are seasoned musical theatre performers. Many choir members are accomplished soloists.
Encore! presents two full concerts a year, one at Christmas and the other in the spring.
We enjoy sharing concerts with other groups but we often perform on our own, which gives us the opportunity to showcase the unique talents and abilities of our members. We enjoy performing at special events and particularly for charitable causes.
We also compete in amateur choir festivals. In the 2011 Cowichan Valley Music Festival, Encore! Women’s Choir won an award and was selected to represent the Cowichan Valley in the Provincial Music Festival.
In April 2015, Encore! participated in the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival. The choir received two awards: The Victoria Choral Society award for the most outstanding choral performance of the festival, and the Commonwealth Community Choir award, for the most outstanding community choir. In 2016, Encore! again participated in the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival, and again received the Commonwealth Community Choir award.
In order to continue providing innovative and challenging music to the Cowichan Valley, we need your support. With your support we offer you the opportunity to receive advertising and to benefit from community relationships. We thank you in advance for your kind consideration in becoming a sponsor of Encore! Women’s Choir.
Encore! Women's Choir was formed from its parent body the Opus 1 Singers Society.
